(Gopichandran et al., 2024) - Effectiveness of Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) and Deep Breathing Exercise on Pain, Disability, and Sleep Among Patients With Chronic Tension-Type Headache: A Randomised Control Trial (RCT)

  • RCT on those with chronic tension-type headaches over 12 weeks
  • PMR therapy and deep breathing exercises (20 min every night) effectively reduced pain severity, frequency, headache-related disability and sleep quality at 4, 8 and 12 weeks


(Probyn et al., 2017) - Non-pharmacological self-management for people living with migraine or tension-type headache: a systematic review including analysis of intervention components

  • Non-pharmacological education or psychological self management interventions
  • Assessed overall effectiveness
  • Self-management interventions for migraine and tension type headache are more effective than usual care reducing pain intensity, mood and headache related disability - but no effect on headache frequency

(Casson et al., 2023) - The effectiveness of activity pacing interventions for people with chronic fatigue syndrome: a systematic review and meta-analysis

  • Activity pacing in those with chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Effectively reduced fatigue as well as psychological distress
  • Also an improvement in physical function
